Despite her celebrity status, former “Lizzie McGuire” star Hilary Duff is like many other mothers who want the best for their children. That’s why she teaches her children some valuable lessons very early in life.

Passing on habits

In an interview for the April cover of Parents magazine, which also features her one-year-old daughter Banks Violet and seven-year-old son Luca Cruz, Duff talked about how she passes on her eco-friendly attitude to her children. In particular, she talked about how she and her husband, musician Matthew Koma, are now starting to explain to the boy why they practice their eco-friendly habits. Although Luca is getting more involved, the 32-year-old actress says her son is also “a little heartbroken” when they explain things to him.

However, she is determined to implement more rules to protect the environment in her household. One of those rules is to use reusable containers to store snacks and leftovers. This means more washing up, but she knows it can also make a difference.

Practicing what she preaches

Duff is also part of Unilever and Walmart’s consumer education program called “Bring It to the Bin.”

The “Younger” actress is certainly one to practice what she preaches. In interviews, she has already shared her own recycling tips and encouraged others to do the same. She talked about how only 9% of all plastic packaging is recycled, and urged more brands to reuse their old packaging and recycle it into new.

Duff also pointed out the importance of buying eco-friendly products and changing your habits to do so. She also suggested others to sort their household waste into the right bins, which she herself practices at home.

Mixed family

She manages to balance her commitment to the environment with raising her blended family. Duff recently married Koma in an intimate ceremony at her Los Angeles home. The wedding makes Duff and Luca, whom she shares with ex-husband Mike Comrie, as well as Koma and their daughter together, Banks Violet, a family. The actress also spoke about how the two boys get along and revealed that Coma and Luca have formed a special relationship. She even says that the duo coined the name “the cute team” for themselves. Before dating the songwriter, Duff raised her son as a single mom after splitting from Comrie.
